How to Pick the Best Cat Food for Your Kitty

Just like any living thing, cats need food to sustain themselves, to grow, and have the energy to play and be your best friend. You, as the loving pet owner, have to make certain not only to feed your cat, but to feed your cat the right food, so that it can live a long, healthy life with you. Feeding your cat healthy food is also a great way for you to save money, as your cat will be much less likely to get sick if you feed her a healthy, nutritious diet, which means that you will not have to spend money taking her to the veterinarian.

Cats need many of the same essentials that we do; they need protein, an amino acid called taurine, water, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and enzymes. Many commercial cat foods also have carbohydrates added, but they are only there for your benefit, your cat doesn’t require carbohydrates in her diet. They have to add preservatives so that the cat food will stay fresh for you, but they also add ingredients for your benefit that serve no purpose for your cat, such as sugar, flavoring, coloring, and binders.

You really have three options when it comes to purchasing manufactured cat food, and those are dry food, canned food, and wet food. Most veterinarians suggest you feed your cat a healthy mixture of all three, so that he has a better shot of getting all of the essential vitamins and nutrients he needs. Out of the three, dry food will be the most convenient for you, as you only have to pour it in your cat’s bowl and not worry about it until it is empty, and your cat can munch on it throughout the day, while you are at work, school, wherever. Canned food has a lot of water, which is something that your cat likely doesn’t get enough of anyway, so you should try to feed your cat canned food at least once a day.

Pet food can be rather expensive, especially if you are caring for more than one animal, so you also have to try to stick to your budget as much as possible. If you give your cat dry food when you are away and canned food when you are home, she should get all of the water and nutrients she needs, and shouldn’t get bored with the same food. Cats can be rather picky, and if you feed the same type of food too often, they will get to a point where they will refuse to eat it. Even if you are on a tight budget, you should stay away from the cheaper brands of cat food, as they seldom have the capability of meeting your cat’s nutritional needs, ending up costing you more money in vet bills.

Learn how to read the labels on cat food, and buy those that list specific meats, such as made with beef, fish, or chicken, rather than just saying made with meat, because you have no real idea what these foods are made of. If you are unsure what pet food you should purchase for your cat, talk to your veterinarian, or an expert at your local pet supply store.
